United Press International reports the holiday travel toll climbs with 178 highway deaths since Wednesday 6 p.m. EST as balmy weather spurs motorists nationwide. Fires and other accidents push the total to 209, with California 13 and New York 11 among the hardest hit states.
A string of holiday crashes across states leaves at least 20 dead. A pickup collision near Pinckneyville Illinois kills three, including a Waynesville Missouri couple bound for relatives. Five teens die near Tacoma after a two car crash on a homecoming trip. A Burkburnett Texas woman loses control during a heart attack run, hitting a pedestrian and injuring another. A Kansas City Kansas duo en route home from Colorado perish when their car hits a bridge abutment on the Kansas Turnpike at Lawrence. In Prague a Bulgarian airliner crashes near Bratislava killing 84 aboard. CTK cites 76 passengers and eight crew. The cause remains undetermined and Bratislava lies near borders with Austria and Hungary.
Rain and showers develop today over extreme northern New England upper Appalachians and Ohio valley. Pacific Northwest gets rain while southern Rockies see showers. Northern Rockies face snow flurries. Elsewhere is fair to partly cloudy and mild in the eastern third. Tonight and Saturday Mostly cloudy with mild temps and a few showers. Highs upper 50s to 50s, lows in 40s. Winds light and variable.
The government said explosives planted in the Aden Airways DC3 passenger cabin caused the Monday crash, killing 28. Interior ministry investigations conclude unknown terrorists carried out the act, ending rumors of sabotage in BOAC subsidiary service. Witnesses reported seeing the plane explode in midair.
