Funds called key to saving 35¢ fare in NYC transit

Gov Rockefeller and mayor elect Beame said federal action could preserve the 35-cent bus and subway fare. After a 22 hour meeting they voiced optimism but differed on outcomes if Congress does not approve a $400 million mass transit bill offering up to $100 million to New York City. Rockefeller to decide on reelection before January Legislature

Vesco seeks Argentine residency amid extradition fight

Robert L. Vesco, under extradition to the United States from the Bahamas, has filed for an Argentine resident visa. Kennedy son undergoes successful cancer surgery

Dr. Philip Caper said Edward Moore Kennedy Jr. has an excellent chance that surgery arrested the cancer in his right leg. The 12-year-old son of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy had his right leg amputated above the knee after a cartilage tissue tumor was disclosed.

Faulkner Keeps Unionist Reins In Northern Ireland

Brian Faulkner narrowly defeats an attempt by hardliners to seize control of the Unionist party at a key emergency meeting. Delegates supported Faulkner by ten votes, backing a policy of cooperating with the British effort to form a cross sectarian coalition government. The rival unpledged faction, led by John Taylor and Harry West and backed by the Orange Order, had called for rejecting power sharing with Catholics.
