Indians seize Bureau of Indian Affairs offices in Washington
About 500 Indians protested broken treaties by occupying the BIA offices and auditorium in Washington. Two injured in a scuffle with guards. They demanded 20 reforms including treaty enforcement and land protection, after being refused food and housing. Demonstrators held a Sioux pipe ceremony inside.

Illinois panel warns against backing trains after fatal wreck
The Illinois Commerce Commission urged eight commuter railroads to bar passenger trains from backing into a signal block after overshooting a platform. Investigators say the rearward move by the front train may have contributed to the crash that killed 44 and left 320+ injured. Armstong cited safety concerns and noted passengers said backing is common on Chicago lines. Seventy people remained hospitalized in ten hospitals, with one in critical condition.

Allende forms new cabinet amid nationwide strikes
SANTIAGO socialist President Salvador Allende announced a reshuffled 15 member cabinet as worldwide strikes paralysed commerce and services. Cabinet Secretary-General Hernan Del Canto said the new ministers would be named later after resignations in a bid to ease opposition pressure.

Soviets test megaton blast underground
The Soviet Union reportedly exploded a nuclear device underground in the megaton class. The Uppsala Seismological Institute and Prof. Markus Baath, head of the Swedish institute, estimated the yield at between one and five megatons and possibly larger, equating to millions of tons of TNT.
