Marine killed in battle with Dominican rebels
A U S Marine was killed and 13 other American servicemen wounded in gun fire near the U S Embassy in Santo Domingo as Marines and 82nd Airborne troops created an international refuge zone. President Johnson announced a cease fire agreement not being observed and O A S Secretary General Jose A Mora flew in to help enforce it. Leftist rebel forces supported by Cuba and Czechoslovakia faced the mounting U S and Dominican army efforts to trap them.
