The United States and Turkey reached a four year accord allowing American military installations to reopen in Turkey in exchange for about one billion dollars in grants and loans. Congress must approve, amid alarm over Turkey's Cyprus policy and the Cyprus crisis.
Guards stormed Cellblock D at Brushy Mountain State Prison to free a hostage guard after a nine hour siege by 16 inmates. One prisoner was lightly wounded by birdshot. others were confined to their cells as officials said negotiations had failed and safety of staff was at risk.
Muslim leaders demand the resignation of President Suleiman Franjieh and sweeping constitutional changes as a condition for ceasefire. Amid ongoing fighting in Beirut the conflict shows little abatement with heavy shelling and an estimated civilian toll near 100 daily for five days. Kamal Jumblatt signals possible talks with Hafez al Assad under mediation efforts while Pierre Gemayel upholds armed Christian resistance and Syria mediated talks continue.
Secretary of State Kissinger told a Senate committee the administration’s contingency reviews against Cuba are precautionary and not tied to an imminent crisis. He said warnings aim to deter Cuba and the Soviet Union from further African military involvement and stressed no immediate move is planned. He noted about 12,000 Cuban forces abroad as a factor in avoiding new actions against Rhodesia’s white-ruled government.
King-size carver John Zweifel of Orlando Florida displays a hand carved model of the White House he spent 16 years completing. The exact likeness includes miniature furniture for each room. Zweifel and his model tour the country and were shown in Des Moines this week.
Lt. Gen. Videla, viewed as a moderate, will be sworn in as president Monday. The three member junta, including Videla, Adm. Emilio fama, and Brigadier Orlando, will govern with full junta approval for executive decisions.
