High court bars direct state aid to church schools
The Supreme Court ruled in a series of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island cases that state funding for teacher salaries and materials in parochial schools is unconstitutional due to entanglement with religion. It upheld federal construction grants to Catholic and other denominational colleges, finding less risk of religious influence and noting college students’ lesser susceptibility to indoctrination. Justices differed on the breadth of the ruling and dissents argued against the majority’s distinction between state and federal aid.

Rockefeller Signs Parochial Aid Plan In NY Ahead Of Rulings
Governor Rockefeller signed New York's 33 million a year parochial schools aid plan three days before the Supreme Court ruled against similar programs in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. The plan adds funds for secular services and teacher salaries while using a poverty weighted formula to aid low income districts. A court challenge is anticipated from PEARL and the ACLU, with Catholics noting the plan differs enough to merit separate consideration.
