Navy divers locate minisub trapped 300 feet under Atlantic

Navy divers descended 300 feet beneath the Atlantic near Key West and found the 21-foot Johnson Sea-Link research submarine wedged in the wreckage of the destroyer Fred T. Berry, with four men aboard. Oxygen was estimated to run out by noon, delaying surface recovery until a mobile diving chamber arrived from San Diego. The Smithsonian and Harbor Branch Foundation teams coordinated the rescue, with crew including pilot Jock Menzies and ichthyologist Dr. Robert Meek.
