Justice Dept suit blocks Texaco coastal deal restraint of trade
The Justice Department filed suit in New York to halt a February agreement between Texaco Inc and Coastal States Producing Co that would raise Texaco crude purchases and give Texaco options to acquire Coastal States refinery assets. The government argues the pact would reduce competition and threaten independent gasoline marketers. Texaco and Coastal States vowed to contest the complaint. Texaco operates 72 refineries in 38 countries with 8.9 billion in gross 1972 revenue. Coastal States, the nation’s second largest independent refiners, posted 453.9 million gross with 10.9 million profits last fiscal year.
