Mann Jazz Show Transforms Napanoch Prison Auditorium
Herbie Mann and his combo spent about an hour at Eastern Correctional Facility thrilling about 500 inmates with a vivid jazz set that mixed hard rock and soul. The performance, backed by two guitarists and two drummers, drew standing ovations as Mann improvised on Summer Time. Superintendent Patterson called it excellent and beneficial, noting the prison's 70 percent black population are jazz buffs. Mann left 50 records for inmates and said the aim was to offer a different approach to rehabilitation.
