U.S. toll rises from Israel attack on Liberty ship

Pentagon officials say as many as 33 Americans may be killed in the attack on the USS Liberty. Nine sailors are confirmed dead, 24 missing, 75 wounded. The Liberty was struck by a torpedo after an initial air strike, with American carriers America and Saratoga aiding then recalled after Israel admitted responsibility. Prime Minister Eshkol expressed condolences in a message to President Johnson as rescue efforts continued in the eastern Mediterranean near Crete.

Cardinal Ritter Near Death In St Louis ICU

Cardinal Joseph Ritter archbishop of St Louis and a key Vatican II voice was reported near death with a failing heart and grave condition after two heart attacks since Monday. Dr C G Vournas said he remained at Ritter's bedside in DePaul Hospital as relatives including a nun sister and his brother flew in.

The first dependants of U S Air Force personnel arrived at Kennedy Airport from Libya.
