Bell Labs reports longer lasting laser and new optical fiber
Bell Telephone Laboratories announces two advances toward laser communications. A pinhead laser now runs continuously for over three months, and a single-material optical fiber the thickness of a hair carries up to 4,000 simultaneous calls over long distances. Fiber loss is low enough to permit distant repeaters. The firm says the light cable could thread through existing underground conduits, reducing costs.
