A 100-foot crane carefully raises an air conditioning unit to the roof of the renovated North Main Street Highland Telephone Co. building in Monroe. The unit, one of two, will cool the facility housing electronic toll and switching equipment. The larger unit weighs nearly 17 tons.
Kiamesha residents Dermer and Hyman pleaded guilty to a April 25 burglary at Bum and Kei s Restaurant in Loch Sheldrake with sentencing set for July 14 and June 30 respectively. Atty plans probation and restitution for Dermer. Separately a Jersey City man received zero to two years for murdering his mother in Highland Falls. A county tour of Monroe historic sites is scheduled at 1 p.m. Sunday led by Town Historian Morris Simon.
Wallkill school official warns area merchants that Capitol Safety Co. has not been authorized to solicit ads for a school safety calendar. The firm has used multiple names and has a history of misrepresentation and false advertising. The district urges merchants to ignore solicitations and not pay for ads.
Ford plant workers in Mahwah had planned protests over new no parking signs on Matthews Street near state land used as a carpool depot. Goshen Police Chief Frederick Walker said parking off the street remains legal, and the signs aim to keep traffic off Matthews Street while preserving off street pooling areas.
A 23 year old escapee from Petersburg Virginia State Prison Farm was arrested around 3 a.m. Friday in New Paltz after allegedly stealing a Woodstock woman’s car at noon Thursday. Richard D. Agler Jr. was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and facing second degree sexual abuse charges. The hitchhiking suspect abducted the driver on Meade Mountain Road before she escaped into a forest and summoned police.
From 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday multiple incidents reported across ORANGE COUNTY and SULLIVAN ULSTER counties. Calls include false alarms at Fostertown School Pine Hill and Woodstock transformer and chimney fires, a Maybrook house fire, and port Ewen electrical fire with Monticello and Port Jervis responses. A resuscitator call was logged at 172 Dubois Street Newburgh.
