Cox seeks court order to curb newsroom coverage of hearings
Special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox asked a court to limit television radio and press coverage of certain Senate testimony. He urged the Senate Watergate committee be in closed sessions when witnesses granted immunity offer self incriminating testimony. Senator Ervin objected saying the Senate as an arm of the legislature conducts investigations free from judicial or executive interference. The move widens a weeklong rift between Cox and the senators over publicity and immunity for former White House aides Dean and Magruder. The court will hear arguments Friday on Cox opposition to immunity for Dean TI and Magruder.
