Albany Mall costs soar to triple original estimate

Comptroller Arthur Levitt released an audit showing the South Mall project will top 1.5 billion dollars, more than triple the 1964 estimate of 490 million. The report notes the 99-acre complex now faces delays to mid-1975 and cites high per usable foot costs, with the 44-story tower priced at about 93.96 per foot versus private offices at roughly 40 to 45. The Office of General Services cites inflation as a key factor, while Governor Rockefeller defends the project as cost comparable to private space.
