Fire kills 12 in Kansas City apartment blaze

A three story brick building suffered a deadly fire in Kansas City killing 12 people including eight children. The top floor was largely destroyed trapping residents as smoke and flames forced families to flee. A 5 month old died after being carried from a window by his father who was seriously injured. The blaze left 99 homeless with damage estimated at 30 thousand dollars. The cause was not yet determined. Names and ages of the victims included Lawrence M Smith and his wife Barbara 19 their child Lora 2 Rex Johnson and children 7 and 5 and 2 and 3 Joyce Franks 21 Eddie Goddens 5 and Scarlett Christine 3.

Scattered showers are likely over portions of the Southern Plains and lower Florida with generally fair weather elsewhere. A warming trend is seen in the Mid-West as partly cloudy skies persist with afternoon temperatures in the 70s. Tonight will be fair and cool with lows near 45. Thursday brings partly cloudy skies and a little warmth with highs 74 to 80. Winds will be westerly 15 to 20 mph. Middletown rainfall to date stands at 12.24 inches, yesterday’s rain totaled .64 inches, last year had 17.05 inches.

Gas Mains Blow In Gary Indiana

A gas main explosion on Gary s south side caused an hour long series of blasts demolishing at least four homes and forcing evacuation of a six block area. Nine injured including a critical burn victim. police searched for additional casualties as firemen and residents faced mass confusion and fear. Authorities later said the danger was over and residents could return home with windows open.

Ten Soviet citizens warned a world conference of communist parties that the USSR is returning to Stalinism. They said only silence follows persecution, but people will not be silenced and cannot agree that socialism equals Stalinism after a half century of socialist rule.

Police probe girls murders near Ocean City NJ

State police questioned more than a dozen people about the stabbing murder of two teenage daughters of prominent businessmen. No arrests were made as investigators seek contacts with the victims in Ocean City.
