The Agriculture Department suggested retail food prices may have already peaked for the year, though the cost of living index could still rise as services and some items push overall costs higher. Farm prices edged down 0.75 percent in the May 15 period, remaining 5 percent above a year ago, while production costs held steady. ERS predicted softer cattle prices in summer, small hog price gains, and a higher spring vegetable tonnage, possibly altering seasonal trends.
