President seeks broad powers to curb air pollution

President Johnson urged Congress to pass the Air Quality Control Act of 1967 to curb industrial emissions and create regional air quality commissions. He asked for expanded federal research funding, new national parks and enhanced water resource planning, stressing federal action if states fail to act and warning of worsening pollution within a decade.

Farm prices fall 1 percent in January decline

The Agriculture Department reported a 1 percent drop in farm prices for the month ending January 15. Prices received by farmers for crops and livestock were 3 percent below the year ago level, with cotton, wholesale milk, and eggs driving the fall. This marks the fifth straight monthly decline, about 6.25 percent since mid August 1966 peak.
