Banks cut rates in wake of Chase Manhattan move

Major banks from coast to coast followed Chase Manhattan Bank in lowering rates from 6 percent to 5 3/4 percent. The Mellon National Bank, Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co, Bank of America in San Francisco, and others announced the new rate Friday, signaling a broad nationwide move.

Credit thaw boosts stocks in brisk trading

New York stocks rose Friday as investors welcomed signs of looser credit though profit taking trimmed gains late. Analysts noted a 14 point cut to 534 percent in prime rates by major banks as constructive, despite Chase Manhattan's larger reduction earlier.
