Israeli forces ended a four day push into southern Lebanon withdrawing back to Israel after heavy bombardment that killed an estimated 50 Arab guerrillas and wounded 10. South Vietnamese Launch Third Major Drive Into Cambodia

South Vietnamese troops pressed a three pronged cross border offensive into Cambodia as part of an allied push to blunt a Communist offensive. In the Parrot's Beak region near Svay Rieng heavy fighting left 52 guerrillas dead, 16 Vietnamese soldiers killed, and 9 wounded.

Chief rules out amnesty for draft evaders

Selective Service Director Curtis Tarr told a Kennedy subcommittee that general amnesty for Vietnam era draft dodgers would jeopardize inductions and strain local boards. He warned that blanket or partial amnesty could set an unwelcome precedent and affect discipline in the armed forces.

Mine official blames state for dam disaster delay

Ben Tudor of Buffalo Mining Co says attempts to drain the dam were rejected by West Virginia officials who feared water spillage would pollute waterways. The mile-long dam failed after heavy rain, sending a 30-foot surge of water and sludge through an 18-mile valley, with 66 dead, 102 injured, and about 300 missing.

Protestants retaliate in Belfast amid Northern Ireland violence

In Belfast protesters attacked Catholic targets in what police call a Protestant backlash. In Aldershot two Irish laborers were jailed over a February bombing of a British army mess that killed a Catholic chaplain gardener and five women. Fire destroyed a Catholic community relations building on Springfield Road and a social center in Ballymurphy Housing Estate.

Italy dissolves parliament and sets early elections

President Giovanni Leone dissolved the Italian Parliament after months of infighting leading to two government collapses in six weeks. Acting Premier Giulio Andreotti’s minority government calls elections for May 7, the first premature vote since 1924, as a stable government for 15 months seemed unattainable.

Witness rejects murder contract in Yablonski case

Prosecution witness James E. Phillips testified he was approached to murder mine union official Joseph A. Yablonski for 1000 dollars but declined the plan. The testimony opened the trial of Paul E. Gilly and four co defendants for the December 31 1969 killings at Clarksville Pennsylvania.

Pioneer 10 launch delayed by Cape Kennedy weather

The space agency attempted a second launch of Pioneer 10 toward Jupiter from Cape Kennedy but high altitude winds again delayed the 8 45 p m EST window. Forecasters predicted winds would subside later. the 565 pound spacecraft and atlas centaur rocket remained ready. In Los Angeles a mass transit strike closed the system halting 400 000 riders and blocking the world’s largest freeway network.
