Meyer Lansky testified in a contempt trial that his illness prevented him from answering a 1971 grand jury subpoena. The 70 year old underworld figure spoke briefly on the stand as the defense rested and the judge scheduled final arguments and deliberations.
The defense in the Pentagon Papers trial contends Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo Jr. did not commit espionage theft or conspiracy. They assert no law was violated and that government laws are being misapplied to cover acts not penalized by statute.
Washington UPI reports the Agriculture Department's January outlook forecasts average retail beef prices over 1.20 dollars per pound. The analysis notes the expected record level reflects market pressures and ongoing price trends influencing consumers nationwide.
