Ex-Marine freed on bond after Birmingham supermarket shooting
A 23-year-old unemployed white man, Emory Warren McGowen, posted 1500 bond after being charged with assault with intent to murder for shooting five Negro civil rights pickets at a Birmingham supermarket. Victims Willie Andrews and Willie Maxwell were hospitalized, while Alberta Tate and Simon Armstrong were treated and released. Police said he surrendered at headquarters after the Monday night incident as ministers condemned racial violence.

Tass reports a Cosmos 110 satellite carrying dogs Veterok and Ugolyok in an elliptical orbit with apogee around 561 miles and perigee about 185 miles. No recovery plan announced.
