Life jacket from missing tanker found in Florida Straits

A navy boat recovered a life jacket marked Sulphur Queen from the Marine Sulphur Queen, a 524-foot tanker missing since February 3 with 39 aboard. Debris including a life raft was found in an oil slick about 14 miles southeast of Key West. A renewed search for survivors was launched.

Race and political clash over Powell Capitol charges

A running battle erupted between Sen. John J. Williams and Rep. Adam Clayton Powell with Powell accusing Williams of racial attack and Powell claiming a 100 percent civil rights opposition record. Williams denied race as motive and warned against clouding the issue.
