U S scientists placed a 150 pound communications satellite named Syncom into orbit at Cape Canaveral then lost radio contact twelve hours later. Ground signals failed to elicit a reply and officials said the craft may have been misdirected or damaged after its motor firing.
A row of propane tanks on a 29 story Manhattan apartment house exploded in 18 blasts. The blasts sparked a fire and showers of embers over streets and buildings as tanks were hurled to the pavement. A housewife described diving under a bed as yellow flames rose.
