Kennedy hosts Emancipation Proclamation centennial at White House
President Kennedy entertained 800 guests at a White House reception marking the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation as Republicans held Lincoln Day events nationwide. A Civil Rights Commission report, prepared from Brooklyn College historian John Hope Franklin’s manuscript, warned the North may be the final battleground for equality amid lingering “gentleman’s agreements.” The study, titled Freedom to the Free, notes progress is slow but inexorable, with the South resisting established law and social change while the North faces housing and employment discrimination. The report concludes citizenship is not yet fully realized for American Negroes and more ground lies ahead.
