Monster gas tank explosion kills 40 workers in Staten Island
Firemen pulled 24 bodies from the eight story liquefied natural gas tank after a blast at 1 20 p m Saturday. Three workers escaped. Officials revised the inside count to 40 dead, with 3 survivors. Texas Eastern Transmission Co said they found no explosive in the tank. President Nixon and OSHA pledged a full investigation. Mayor Lindsay called it the city’s largest disaster in years.
