Juan V. Corona, 38, Mexican national from Yuba City, was denied a new trial and sentenced to 25 consecutive life terms for the Feather River mass murder of 25 itinerant farm workers in 1971. Judge Richard Patton rejected claims of jury tampering after a matron discussed the case with a juror prior to verdict. The court also fined and jailed defense counsel for contempt during proceedings.
Three sailors were killed and eight injured when a boiler room explosion aboard the USS Basilone 420 miles southeast of New York City. Coast Guard helicopters evacuated the wounded to St. Albans Naval Hospital as the ship, under Cmdr. John L. Townley, returned to Newport, Rhode Island, escorted by USS Bowen.
