Viet Cong 72 hour Christmas ceasefire takes effect as American and South Vietnamese on guard for violations. Allied 24 hour cease fire starts 6 p.m. Christmas Eve amid scattered battles, with two US helicopters shot down and four wounded. Communists pledge to punish military actions but say they will patrol near their units.
Today's forecast calls for North and Central Pacific Coast areas to see fair to partly cloudy skies with little change in temperatures nationwide. Snow is expected in the Northern Rockies Upper Mississippi Valley and the Northeast, with freezing temperatures over the Great Lakes and portions of Northern New England.
Secretary of State William P. Rogers said infiltration into South Vietnam through December 1 was 60 percent lower than year earlier, signaling a tapering trend. White House officials noted possible move toward negotiations if declines continue, while Rogers praised Nixon era Vietnamization for shifting war burden to South Vietnam.
