U S and Brazilian Troops Quell Santo Domingo Riots

U S and Brazilian troops quelled new riot outbreaks in downtown Santo Domingo on Monday. Tear gas was used twice by Brazilian forces to break up street clashes with no reported casualties. The violence followed Sunday’s fierce fighting in nearby Santiago between Dominican military factions. American paratroopers arrived by air and ended the nine hour battle. At least 26 and possibly 40 died in Santiago, among them former army chief Col Juan Maria Lora Fernandez. Caamano Deno coordinated but was evacuated unharmed by U S helicopers and escorted home under Inter-American Peacekeeping guard. A government commission was announced to investigate.

Fanfani blamed for false peace hopes in Vietnam talks

Italian Foreign Minister Amintore Fanfani faced sharp criticism for repeating reports Hanoi was ready to negotiate ending the Vietnam War. Giorgio la Pira cited a Ho Chi Minh claim of willingness to meet for peace, while Washington cited denials from Hanoi. The State Department confirmed the peace feelers.
