WESTTOWN A Dairylea Cooperative assessment of 3255 dollars to help cover over 18 million dollars in bad debts confronts M Arthur and Phyllis Lain who run a Lower Road dairy farm. The couple says they and many established dairy farmers intend to remain in business despite financial burdens and tough conditions.
The Lains, longtime dairy farmers on a 200 year old stone homestead, weigh sticking it out as taxes, utilities, and encroaching development erode profits. Mrs Lain notes income remains marginal despite depreciation allowances, with half their yearly profit eaten by the Dairylea assessment and concerns about the next generation.
The Colorado Rockies near Denver saw fresh snow with more to come as rain is expected to switch to snow. Skier activity rises in the high country while Denver resident Tom Byers reports powder in the mountains.
