Newburgh mayor urges end to petty jealousies in renewal drive

Newburgh learns it will receive 9 million dollars for a 105 acre riverfront urban renewal project. Mayor Joseph Mullin urges citizens to lay aside political differences to push the program forward, stressing citizen participation and cross party cooperation as essential. The grant, among the largest for the city, backs a two year plan including planning, relocation, and new public housing with 8.77 million for project development and 360 thousand for planning from HHFA.

Veterans freed from Viet Cong say they want to quit Army

Two American soldiers George E. Smith of Chester West Virginia and Claude D. McClure of Chattanooga Tennessee said they plan to spearhead a campaign to get the United States out of Vietnam. They were released by the Viet Cong after two years in captivity and spoke at a Cambodian border news conference. The men said they were treated well and denied brainwashing, though their remarks raised concerns about potential indoctrination during captivity.
