Mississippi flood sets record as rescue efforts falter

Rescue workers struggle on as the Mississippi’s record crest moves south from Iowa to Louisiana. Eight deaths blamed on floods across eight states. damage projected near 400 million with potential to reach a billion. Illinois and Missouri levees falter as the river nears 40 feet, while Washington and local officials seek federal disaster aid. President Nixon to visit Meridian Miss amid the deluge.

Quake Rocks Hawaiian Islands Centered 12 Miles NE of Big Island

A 6.5 quake reported by the Geological Observatory of Hawaii was felt across all islands. The Big Island suffered major damage including a collapsed building, water mains bursts, and knocked out communications and a radio station. Downtown Hilo was sealed off and traffic clogged roads as residents checked homes. Maui reported a highway landslide and cracks in structures. no injuries were noted elsewhere. The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about 12 miles northeast of the Big Island.

Indians use comrade's death to delay talks at Wounded Knee

Indian militants at Wounded Knee refuse to meet federal negotiators until Sunday mourning a comrade who died from wounds in the April 17 fire fight. The government warns of jail for AIM leader Russell Means if he misses a court hearing. About 68 people with weapons and 860 rounds were arrested on the Pine Ridge reservation.

Japan Railroad Strike Triggers Largest Postwar Labor Crisis

Railroad workers began a nationwide strike in defiance of an old law, halting trains across Japan and triggering protests by millions of public employees including postal workers, teachers, and pilots. Demands include a monthly salary rise of about 81 and repeal of public employee strike bans imposed in 1947.
