Kissinger urges NATO allies to share defense burden

Kissinger told AP luncheon that Nixon opposes shrinking U.S. forces in Europe without similar Russian withdrawals. He urged Western allies to educate publics on security realities of the 1970s and to reach an equitable, safe, and cost-conscious defense posture. The talk follows moves to cut back the 300,000 U.S. troops in Europe after Vietnam cease-fire tensions.

Indians wage psychological warfare at Wounded Knee

UPI reports the Indian occupiers at Wounded Knee use psychological tactics on federal marshals as negotiations stall after 56 days. Deputy AG Richard Hellstein says the government ignores these tactics as part of the theatrics while negotiators decline talks with leaders. More than 100 people, mostly whites, plan to march to Wounded Knee and be stopped at federal roadblocks.

Leslie Gelb, a Defense Department official who supervised the Pentagon Papers compilation, testified that the Top Secret Sensitive classification was a hasty decision made with little content study. Brezhnev appeals for better United States relations

Seven U S senators who met with Leonid Brezhnev reported the Soviet leader urged a halt to arms competition and closer cooperation. The Kremlin session, lasting three hours and six minutes, included Senate Commerce Committee members who said they were encouraged about improving ties, especially in trade, ahead of Brezhnev’s scheduled June visit to Washington.
