Muskie would invite Hoover to resign as FBI director
Senator Edmund S. Muskie on a two day visit to New Hampshire said if he were president he would invite J Edgar Hoover to resign as FBI director. He challenged John Mitchell to disclose if Earth Day rally attendees were under general FBI surveillance and noted over 30 rallies across the country under watch last spring. Muskie suggested reports should speak for themselves and pledged further review if not supported. He spoke at Manchester High School and planned to attend rallies against Nixon next in Providence Rhode Island.
