U S moves to reduce combat role in Vietnam
UPI reports the United States will shift emphasis away from a U S combat role in three fourths of South Vietnam. Battlefield toll nears 900000 on both sides as South Vietnamese forces claim 81 North Vietnamese deaths near Fire Base 6. Rocket and mortar barrages continue while helicopters support a resupply push. Maj Gen Ngo Dzu says Vietnamese counterattacks and U S air strikes have slowed the fighting.
