Harlem mosque shooting injures 3 police and suspects

In West Harlem at Muhammad's Temple of Islam police responded to a reported trouble and found a door forced open after a window was smashed. Patrolman Phillip Cardillo was shot in the chest. Patrolman Victor Padilla was slashed in the face. a third officer suffered bruises. Two suspected attackers were wounded inside the mosque. Authorities probe whether the call was genuine and if officers were lured there. The mayor and police chief visited the wounded at St Luke's Hospital as hundreds of officers patrolled the area.

Amtrak expands western long distance trains this summer

Amtrak plans added long distance trains and boosted Metroliner service on the New York Washington corridor. A new coast to coast route from New York to Los Angeles via Kansas City will join a Chicago to Los Angeles train. Some East routes will be cut back, and a Washington St Louis through-car service may end, forcing a change at North Philadelphia for Washington St Louis riders. Through-car service between end points may violate Amtrak law per Volpe framework. It was unclear if passenger groups will oppose the plan.

Weather Ahead in Lower Hudson Valley With Showers Possible

Today's forecast calls for cloudy skies with rain likely developing and highs in the upper 40s to 50s. Tonight features lingering showers and lows from the upper 30s to mid 40s, followed by Sunday with variable cloudiness and a few showers possible, highs mainly in the 50s. Rain chances run about 70 percent today and 50 percent tonight, with winds east to southeast 10 to 20 mph and west to north on Sunday. Rainfall totals to date include Middletown 9.95 inches, Newburgh 9.40 inches, and Monticello 13.60 inches, with last year figures shown for comparison. Gerrity quotes on ITT aide in tears over job fear

Edward J. Garrity told a Senate committee that ITT lobbyist Dita Beard phoned him in tears over possible job loss. He claimed he reassured her she could keep the job until 65, then implied she could be pushed out in a wheelchair. Beard later named Bill Merriman and Hal Geneen as people she loves.
