Wagner bows out of NYC race

Former New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner declined a potential Republican Liberal fusion bid for mayor and will not seek a fourth term. The Liberal party expressed regret and said it would seek a new candidate to unite the good government forces in the city. Governor Rockefeller said he understood Wagner's decision and remains focused on good government.

Ellsberg testifies on Vietnam War experiences in Pentagon Papers case

Daniel Ellsberg described visiting villages in South Vietnam to verify pacification efforts and witnessing a burning hamlet, mortar fire from a regiment of the South Vietnamese army, and schools funded by American money built with poor cement. He said he changed his views after seeing the realities firsthand and disclosed top secret Vietnam War documents. Ellsberg and co defendant Anthony Russo face espionage conspiracy and theft charges.

Indictments rise in Wounded Knee occupation case

A federal grand jury in Sioux Falls returned 25 more indictments in the Wounded Knee seizure, bringing total indictments to 79. The sealed cases name AIM leaders, as negotiators discussed a Sioux medicine man inspired proposal to end the impasse.

Anderson relinquishes documents on Indian Bureau occupation

Washington columnist Jack Anderson handed copies to a congressional committee of documents seized during the November occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs officials said the materials relate an ugly story of government abuses of Indians and were turned over Wednesday.
