FBI captures hijacker at Portland airport after ransom demand
A 56 year old Vancouver Washington man, Major Burton Davenport, dressed in a suit, attempted to hijack a Continental Airlines 707 at Portland Airport demanding 500000. Passengers were moved to a Pan American flight as FBI agents arrested him without injuries.

Sunny to partly cloudy and seasonably mild today with highs 50 to 60. Increasing afternoon clouds bring a chance of rain or wet snow tonight, lows in the 30s. SALT talks press for progress as Nixon visit nears
In Helsinki negotiators pressed for limits on defense weapons and certain missiles during a short session of SALT. Working groups on science and policy met between plenaries to push toward a possible agreement ahead of Nixon's Moscow trip. In London Lord Chalfont quit his Labour post triggering a party rift, while in Moscow the US and USSR signed an enlarged two year cultural accord expanding exchanges and appointing up to eight full time instructors for universities in each country.
