Senate vote sticks to Nixon veto on rehab bill

The Senate 60 to 36 upheld President Nixon's veto of a 2.6 billion three year vocational rehabilitation program. Republicans and a few conservative Democrats blocked the two thirds override, signaling party unity and budget restraint. Supporters called the measure beneficial to physically and mentally handicapped individuals seeking employment.

Magee trial ends with hung jury in California

The eight day murder kidnap trial of Ruchell Magee ends in a hung jury with an 11 to 1 split against acquittal on murder and for conviction on kidnapping. Judge Colvin sets a possible retrial as prosecutors forecast another trial while defense questions pursue. Magee pledges readiness for a second clash with the state. Juror Moses Shepherd says he was the holdout on kidnapping while others doubted murder guilt.

Pompidou Renames Messmer Premier In France

President Georges Pompidou designated Pierre Messmer again as premier designate after Gaullist victory in elections. He urged social reforms to reduce inequalities and criticized long presidential terms in a message to the National Assembly.

Earthquake rattles Colombia. Pereira and Armenia hit

An earthquake struck central and southwestern Colombia causing alarm and some damage with no casualties. Rev Jose Rafael Goberna of the Andes Geophysics Institute placed the epicenter 145 miles southwest of Bogota with intensity 6 to 6.5 and said Pereira and Armenia were mainly affected as Wounded Knee talks entered a fourth day. ECM leaders seek closer U S ties as arrests total 200.

Talks near breakthrough after fourth straight day

The 35 day stalemate continues with optimism in Wounded Knee as negotiators inch toward a settlement within days. UPI reports AIM militants held 11 residents during the February 27 siege and the court case delay involved attorney Ramon Roubideaux guiding patience.
