Leaders of New York City and Long Island mailmen who began the nation’s first postal strike meet to weigh another walkout unless Washington negotiators reach a wage agreement soon. Offers and counteroffers were made, not disclosed, then talks recessed as slowdowns and union meetings disrupt operations at major papers.
The trucking industry presented a wage offer to the Teamsters Union just hours before the contract expired. Union spokesmen say workers have not yet voted on a strike and anticipate a two to three day polling window before any decision.
Howard G. Samuels, earlier a declared gubernatorial candidate, meets with his staff before the Democratic state convention opens at Grossinger's. Balloting for nominations is expected today with Arthur Goldberg still the favorite. Samuels reiterates commitment to a primary.
Attorney F. Lee Bailey faced a contempt of court hearing and urged air traffic controllers to return to work on Tuesday. Flights were delayed due to weather in some regions while the number of controllers at regional control centers showed an uptick.
