After years of drought western Nebraska sees rain bringing joy to wheat growers who have completed seeding while delaying irrigation harvesters face less favorable news for beans and potatoes. Cool overcast days threaten crops as October hunting season nears and duck migration begins, with farmers watching weather anxiously.
Three people die in a collision between a car and an eastbound Union Pacific streamliner near Crook Colorado. Mary Walz 49 Henry Lee Walz 5 and Henry Wagner 39 Bayard were killed. Wagner driver failed to see the train at a crossing. Train engineer J T Guynan from North Platte. Train slowed two hours.
A Dalton boy Roy Parady, 12, was severely injured in a July 10 automobile bicycle crash. Doctors in Omaha believe the brain injury will likely prevent him from ever walking or talking, though he showed rare signs of arousal recently.
About 250 World War vets are expected to attend the district convention in Gering on Oct 14. Panhandle counties will be represented. W. H. Pittam of Alliance commands the district. Activities include business sessions at Riviera theatre a barbecue in Legion park and a closing dance in Lyman hall. Election of officers is on the agenda and the auxiliary meets at the same time with district president Mrs W P Ackerman of Sidney.
Clarke Grieve captured the Sid ney Country Club golf title with a 10 9 victory over Jess Tompkins in heavy weather. Grieve led 35 34 after the first eighteen and added five more holes in the final nine to secure the match in twenty seven. His sub par 69 for the round highlighted a steady, relentless performance.
Secretary Knox announces local communities gain credit for each recruit and that Selective Service quotas are reduced accordingly. Paul L. Martin, head of the local draft board, urges 17 to 31 year olds to join the Navy or Naval Reserve to aid quota filling. High school education not required. parental consent needed for under 21. physical and other requirements apply.
The Telegraph reports the 1941 1942 directory of school boards and teachers is being prepared for County Superintendent Edith Oldershaw. Delays caused by resignations slowed the process but faculties are now filled and all schools are ready for a good year.
Winter wheat seeding in Nebraska advanced rapidly under favorable conditions with 80 percent sown in western panhandle and about 80 percent completed in Kimball Cheyenne Deuel Banner counties. Central 54 percent, east central 34 percent, southwest 68 percent, south central 72 percent, southeast about three percent. Rye seeding outpaced wheat with priority in north central northeast and northwest. Alfalfa largely sown and grass seeds three quarters planted. 1941 yield was 33,666,600 bushels with 1942 acreage forecast 3,146,579 acres.
In the opening meet of the season Sidney and Scottsbluff girls split eight matches. Doubles saw Radcliffe and Hill of Sidney defeat Smith and Hauserman of Scottsbluff 6-2 6-1. Singles featured Lovers of Scottsbluff beating Waite of Sidney 9-7 4-6 7-5 and Stevens of Sidney blanking Simian 6-0 6-0.
The American National Bank issued its largest Sidney statement on September 24 totaling 1,655,975 dollars with deposits at 1,555,884.38 dollars, up over 500000 since the June 30 report. Wheat loans and regular bank loans comprise 678,725.97 and 321,172.02 dollars respectively. bank has handled Cheyenne county farmers wheat loans during 1941. President A. J. Jorgenson says the harvest period brought one of the busiest times in bank history.

St Patrick s Academy geridders opened the six man football season with a 13 to 6 conference win over Broadwater. Coach Lyle Carlson saw the Irish gain early momentum as Martin Heeg scored both touchdowns and cleared the way for his teammates. The victory starts LPV AA play strong with a non league clash against Chadron Academy upcoming for valuable experience.
The Sterling Navy Recruiting Station reports Donald Alpert Cruise of Sidney has been accepted and ordered to report October 2. He enlisted for six years to avoid draft and is Sidney High School class of 1932. Robert Earl Panabaker enlisted as apprentice seaman September 22 and goes to San Diego. Navy ads in The Telegraph promote service advantages.
Cheyenne County will join the statewide rat control drive on Halloween night in late October. County Agent Swinbank says preparations are underway to organize the entire county for the campaign. He notes damage averages about 1.50 per rat on farms with 1160 farms, implying direct losses of about 40 000 to 50 000 dollars in the county alone.
Three youths Homer Bilickendorfer Donald Homer and John Mathews were bound over to the U S District Court after a hearing before Commissioner R A Barlow. They face a Dyer act federal charge for stealing a motorcycle at Rapid City and crossing state lines. Bond set at 1000 each. They were moved to Omaha by Marshall Sweeney and jailed in Cheyenne county.
Ten Cheyenne county men will enter the army October 23 in answer to the October selective service call. They will report at the induction station in Cheyenne Wyoming. The group includes Henning George Peters, Earl Hermansen Nielsen, Henry John Loebs Jr, Perry Alvin Roberts, Anton Mathewhause, Vern Martin Nienhuser, Rhynold Helmet Weigers, Merle Donald Christoffers on, George Seatton Chaney and Ergin Henry Marx.
Three Cheyenne airport employees were injured in a viaduct crash on highway No. 30 near Sidney. Frank Baylor suffers a dislocated shoulder. Adolph Sachhetti and Dave Putnam have lacerations and bruises. Sheriff Schulz reports the vehicle jumped the barrier after failing to turn at the viaduct. A separate crash on No. 30 at Potter left Wendell Mathewson with a broken leg and Archie Heimer with cuts. Charles Richard Sanders was fined ten dollars for drunken driving with license suspension.
The Dalton community club deemed the 1941 fall festival the biggest and best yet with strong crowds displays and a successful parade. Dalton High School defeated Lewellen 25 to 0 in football while Meadow Lawn School District 70 won parade honors. The weather was cold and disagreeable.
A 200 pound brown bear is offered to the city to begin a small zoo at the park. The park commission will survey feasibility before accepting. Offer made by Chet Killham to Mayor Roche on Friday. The cub was caught west of Denver by Killham's brother and has lived at Ed Killham farm near Sidney Draw. The bear is in good condition and would please children if a home is found.
