Sidney merchants plan a two day event Friday and Saturday to offer widespread value as part of a series of goodwill sales. The Telegraph will publish participating retailer ads next Friday and merchants hope to draw trade from northeastern Colorado and nearby counties.
Webster, son of Mrs. M. Webster of Sidney, reports escaping a dormitory roof collapse after leaving the top floor as Hurricane Dwight pounded Boston. Debris, flooding, and wreckage filled streets while the northeastern coast suffered massive damage and loss of life.
Western Nebraska football results last Friday puzzled fans by assessing Panhandle teams. Scottsbluff defended conference title with a 13 12 loss to Greeley Colorado while Bearcats were outweighed yet close. Alliance and Sterling tied 0 0 on the Alliance gridiron. Bridgeport crushed Lyman 21 7 signaling a strong 1938 team. Bayard beat Crawford 6 0 and Minatare upset Gering 13 0.
The Townsend club will meet Wednesday night September 28 at eight o clock in the city auditorium. Miss Roberta Schmale, among the nation s top Townsend plan speakers, will present again after popular demand. Public invited.
In Sidney Otteman death inquiry may occur this week as County Attorney Heaton and Dr. Roche seek to clear circum stances before ruling the death accidental. Sheriff Schulz found no robbery signs. The same paper reports Sidney’s Ma roon squad walloped Lodge Pole 31 to 0 with Lundberg scoring on 20 and 30 yard runs and reserves shining in the final period.
The Agri cultural Conservation Association reports a 1938 Farm Act modification allowing Sweet Sorghum crops grown for forage to be used for silage and for land to be classified as non depleting. The ruling, announced by Claude R Wickard, applies to most Nebraska counties but excludes Dixon Dakota Thurston Wayne Cuming Burt Dodge Washington Douglas Sarpy Otoe Johnson Nemaha Pawnee Richardson.
Dr. R. E. Roche, just back from Austria and Germany, warned Lions and Rotary clubs of Europe in a wartime crisis. He explained Germanys aggressive stance and outlined potential outcomes if Chancellor Hitler expands without opposition from major powers.
State Engineer A C Tilley awarded two road projects and recommended federal concurrence on 11 others in a $489000 letting. Eight projects were deferred. County contracts include Scottsbluff Hemingford 3.9 miles grading Peter Kiewit Sons Omaha $6663 and Grover Haring $2440 for culverts. Federal concurrence includes Cheyenne Morrill Sidney to Bridgeport guard rail J B Ofstie $2680 and Sheridan Gordon to Merriman guard rail Grover Haring $992.
Six waitresses at Campbell's cafe in Scottsbluff walked out Saturday after a 10 percent wage cut to take effect October 1. Proprietor W. G. Campbell Jr said he would pay them off and planned a purge of six more agitators. Staff from Sidney and North Platte cafes filled in, keeping service steady.
WPA rolls rise as winter nears with Lloyd H. Dillon of Sidney citing 275 fewer names in six county relief totals this summer. New projects include demolition of the old Central school building and the Tobin opera house, delaying start but ensuring winter employment. Crop failures lift public relief costs in Nebraska. August total $603,000 with 91,058 recipients and county funds up $12,177. WPA payrolls show 29,092 certified workers and earnings of $1,557,937. Old age grants edged higher to about $15.07.
The Cheyenne county Farm Bureau hosts an educational meeting at 2 30 today on the A A Fenske farm to demonstrate bindweed control methods. Whitner, in charge of the Scottsbluff Bindweed district, will conduct the display and answer questions.

The Bureau of Agricultural Economics estimates world wheat supplies for the year starting July 1 at 4.94 billion bushels the second largest on record. Consumption may reach 3.795 billion bushels with a carry-over of 1.145 billion bushels, a near record.

Banner county attorney Frank Glebe investigates a field fight near Harrisburg where six threshing crew members attacked farmer Sherm Blanton after he quit early. Blanton reported partial tar coverage and burns that a physician called painful but not serious.
The Nebraska supreme court appeal of former Lieutenant Governor Walter H. Jurgensen from an embezzlement conviction will not be heard in the week beginning October 3. It is moved to the proposed call for the week of October 17 as attorneys for both sides could not attend the earlier date.
The University of Nebraska board of regents named Prof. W. J. Loeffel as chairman of the animal husbandry department at the agricultural college. He will serve for one year during Prof. H. J. Gramlich’s leave of absence starting November 1 as Gramlich becomes secretary of the American Shorthorn Breeders Association.

Milford Flood of Northport filed a petition by mail with the secretary of state to place his name on the general election ballot as an independent candidate for Congress in the fifth district. The 236 signers mostly failed to list businesses and addresses, and officials will seek an attorney general opinion.
A Kimball county potato picking contest is set for September 29 on the Henry Flohr farm near Kimball. The Lion's Club Farm Bureau and Certified Potato Growers association provide 15 dollars in prize money. First prize 7.50, second 5.00, third 2.50.
The 1938 Nebraska turkey crop is expected to rise 12 percent from 1937 with stronger supplies for Thanksgiving due to plentiful green feed and favorable weather. Nationally, turkey production should grow about 3.7 percent, the state crop and live stock reporting service reports.
Oil dealers in Sidney organized to protest high gas taxes and other charges on oil men and motorists. They elected Wilfred Kreider as chairman and outlined committees for legislation public relations and local affairs. They argued Nebraskas motor vehicle owners pay 72.6 percent of state taxes and noted Cheyenne County collected 62849 from 3656 vehicle owners in 1937.
The annual meeting of the Twelfth Councilor District Medical Society of Nebraska opens in Scottsbluff with lectures by Dr. Earl C. Sage Dr. T Leon Howard and Dr Adolph Sachs. Lincoln Hotel hosts sessions from 10 a m as over 50 doctors from Sioux Scotts Bluff Kimball Banner Box Butte Dawes Morrill Cheyenne and Devel counties attend a public event.
Louis H. Leeder head porter in the employes' club at Caliente Nevada and long service employee of the Union Pacific dining car and hotel department has filed for retirement under the railroad retirement act. He was 65 on September 18 and began in 1905 with DC&H in a temporary outfit inspector post, later serving as manager of the Sidney hotel and various Union Pacific eating houses and clubs.
Three youths and a Hastings girl face burglary charges in county court after a Thursday night break-in at the E S Ewing general merchandise store in Dalton Nebraska. Melvin Martin 17 Mary Martin 16 and Warren Sorenson 17 confessed and were arrested by Sheriff W W Schulz while asleep in their car. Loot including meats canned goods clothing towels dishes and a rear view mirror and car clock was reported recovered. The trio said a robbery of a car in Gurley Friday night was also theirs and the car was found near the Sidney viaduct by Sidney police.
Western Nebraska sugar beets showed gains in weight and sugar content in the last week from 36 fields. S. B. Nuckols of the federal bureau of plant industry said sugar per beet rose about three percent above the five year average, with samples averaging 12.4 percent sugar and weigh 148 pounds. Weather favored beet growth ahead of harvest.
