The Cheyenne county tax levy drops by 73 226 67 over 1931 with total levies set at 459 930 71 vs 553 207 38. City and village taxes rise slightly. state and county cuts drive overall retrenchment. Real estate values fall from 29 598 422 to 24 625 206, a net 4 975 216 decrease.
The 12th annual Dalton fall festival is set with good weather forecast for tomorrow and Thursday. Exhibits will open by nightfall and judges begin Thursday morning with a large display expected as no county fair is held this fall. A Wednesday entry day precedes Thursday’s parade and program including softball and football events. The parade opens the day at ten with a band and float procession. Prize money favors rural schools, and street events including a horseshoe contest follow the parade. Meanwhile a tragic lamp explosion in the Seifer home claimed two year old Darline Lilly and seriously burned Mr. Seifer, with Willabelle slightly injured.
Bankers report midmonth outlook for Nebraska corn shows rapid maturation and good yields in eastern areas, while central, western, and southern districts show mixed conditions from very poor to excellent. Fall moisture short in most regions except northeast and eastern districts. pastures and fall sowing preparations need moisture. Alfalfa seed acreage steady in west and north central areas, with potential reductions elsewhere.
Scout Executive C A Lody of Scotts Bluff area council visited Sidney for two days, boosting the regular winter program funded by Sidney’s Class A participation. He met with the boy scout council and leaders, presented the ten year national program, discussed the Hoover award, and outlined rural scouting among sixteen leaders in a kickoff training course. Local leaders from Troops 90 and 99, S S Dolphin, and merit badge counselors attended, with D J Merritt Ned J Sandburg Roy E Harpe Dean Hagemeister and others taking part.
Alliance defeated Potter 4 to 2 to claim the unofficial Western Nebraska baseball title as 600 spectators watched. Closman led Alliance with three hits while Buck held Potter scoreless late, and Ukulele sparked a sharp defensive game with a crucial fourth inning triple driving in runs.
Sixty-one entrants from Alliance, Scottsbluff, Sterling, Kimball, Gering and Sidney attended the golf meet at Sidney country club last Thursday. Jean McIntosh of Sidney won after an extra hole playoff with Mrs. Rasmussen of Scottsbluff, both finishing 45. Mrs. Martin of Scottsbluff was second with 47, and Mrs. A S Hardy of Sidney defeated Evelyn Doran of Sidney for third after an extra hole playoff at 48. Mrs. Orcutt of Kimball finished fourth.
The Nebraska farm bureau federation has arranged for C. S. Brown to speak in Sidney on Tuesday October 4. He will discuss the agricultural market act and the farm board work aiding development of farmer owned cooperative organizations. Brown travels from Big Springs to Kimball that afternoon.
Scottsbluff voters rejected by 1,638 to 1,254 the plan to acquire Western Public Service properties for municipal ownership. A large turnout of 2,892 ballots set a record, with mail ballots still to be counted but not altering the result. The issue sparked intense campaigning and debate across the community.
Deputy Sheriff George Sheldon chased a southbound Burlington freight train to Dalton and Sidney, beating the train to both towns but the counterfeiters fled with other riders before officers could detain them. The gang passed bogus 25 and 50 cent pieces during the county fair and used several dollars before the hoard was discovered.
Sidney will invite the sixth district teachers convention to be held in 1933. The chamber of commerce read a bid entry letter by Secretary Pavlat and W M Winders moved to extend the invitation. Last fall the teachers meeting brought over $20 000 to Sidney and the city expects a favorable response again. The chamber also voted to assist in entertaining the Western Nebraska organized agriculture meeting in December. A committee including M W Osborn Bob Whitmore and N A S McLean will meet Friday to make preliminary arrangements. M W Dimery gave a stirring address on patriotism and loyalty to help restore order.
Several land sales in central and western Nebraska over the past week show investors still view Nebraska land as a solid bet. Prices are well below normal values but considered adequate for current conditions with multiple transfers detailed across Dawson and Kearney counties and others in Keith County.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Dwight Griswold denounces Governor Bryan for using state banking and road funds for political gain. He condemns pledged bank reforms as unkept and accuses the governor of running a high priced state auto tour, traveling in an armored car funded by taxpayers with police equipment.
The annual duck season runs from Saturday noon October 1 to sunset November 30 in Nebraska. Sidney and Cheyenne counties are poised for opening weekend crowds as sportsmen chase ducks across rivers lakes and creeks in the panhandle. The forecast notes many hunters will be afield and the duck population may shrink by Sunday's end.
Rifle shooting enthusiasm grips western Nebraska towns as normal business returns. The Sidney club, active for several years, gains momentum through strong support from H E Bauman. Local sportsmen and businessmen adopt rifle shooting as a prime outdoor pastime with government arrangements for guns and ammunition.
Sidney's Maroons defeated Sterling 6 to 0 to start a victory run under Coach Leo P. Black. A fourth quarter pass Thomas to Maley broke the scoreless tie as both teams relied on punting and power, with five first downs total and modest yardage for both sides.
