Vern Evans alias Robert Ames of Boise was arraigned on a charge of transporting a stolen car from Colorado to Nebraska and bond set at 2500. He claimed he found the vehicle. Boise jail records show prior intoxicated driving and a jail escape. Separate crash near Sunol kills Frank Miola and wife Treica. six children injured.
Attorneys for Thorwald J Hansen argue in a state supreme court brief that confirmation of a district court foreclosure sale should be reversed and the sale set aside. Hansen was denied a stay and appealed, claiming the mortgagor’s land is worth more than the investment and equity should be allowed.
Mrs E L Hyde is appointed chairman of the county Red Cross roll call drive held yearly between Armistice Day and Thanksgiving. She said there would be no sponsor this year and the campaign will be carried on by women from various organizations chosen for their vigor and enthusiasm for the work.
Robert Flory state secretary said a meeting of county chairmen and secretaries in the Fifth district is set for Broken Bow on September 27 to build an organization for the congressional drive. Young democratic officers will convene at Grand Island on September 30 to outline plans.
Kenneth Reeves was installed as Presbyterian pastor at Dalton at a Box Butte Presbytery meeting last week. Ministers attended from Alli end Gordon Bayard Minatare Lisco Bridgeport Sidney and Kimball. Elders attended from all listed places except Bridgeport.
A two week safety drive in Cheyenne county ends with results beyond expectations. More than a hundred drivers receive summons amid support from law enforcement, city council, county commissioners, American Legion, and chamber of commerce. The city acts to curb double parking and adds rural parking, plus creates business parking lots at Tenth Avenue and Jackson Street. Chief Rogers and Street Commissioner West start enforcing by clearing cars from the business zone.
Farmers with ten livestock units or less may qualify for relief by applying to the county agent. Only two have applied so far though many more are eligible. The ten units cover cattle horses hogs and sheep. A qualifying farmer can receive a $25 monthly cash relief based on $2.50 per unit. Large operators must seek credit through the FCA headquartered at Scottsbluff.
Sidney's Seals dropped a 13 to 7 decision to Fort Warren soldiers at Fort Warren Saturday afternoon. Fort Warren pitcher Roger Hornby dominated early, giving the hosts a lead the Seals could not erase, despite a warm reception for the visiting club by fort officials.
M. L. Baker of the University of Nebraska experimental station at North Platte announced the annual western Nebraska feeder's day will be held on the station grounds October 6. Several prominent livestock producers and College of Agriculture faculty from Lincoln will speak.
Frank Arbold, president of the Nebraska League of County Taxpayers Associations, will speak at the district Farmers Union meeting in Sidney on October 3. He outlines an eight point platform for tax reduction, including airtight budgeting, audits of tax spending, and strict spending limits for counties, schools, and bonding.
Lodge Pole paving five blocks will be let soon as part of a state project on the Lincoln highway. County engineer Charles Gardner, plus state officials M B Jones and T C Middleschwartz, conducted a re survey of the site. Gardner, hired to represent Lodge Pole, said bidding will occur within weeks and noted other survey work for a road from Chappell toward Julesburg to spur traffic into Colorado.
Deputy State Land Commissioner Wehn has completed state land appraisal conferences with county boards and lessees in Perkins, Keith and Arthur counties. He notes Arthur sandhill rents at 6 cents per acre and 60 cents in valleys. Perkins first class wheat land rents at 21 cents with a potential rise to 60 cents. Devel Cheyenne Chase and Frontier lands rent 60 to 72 cents. Wheat yield averages 12.4 bushels per acre, implying about $1 per acre rent if one third of crop paid. Wehn will meet county boards in Lincoln Tuesday, Logan Wednesday, McPherson Thursday.
Republican leaders announce Simmons and Griswold will tour Cheyenne county to launch the state campaign. U S senator candidate Robert G. Simmons arrives September 26 at 4 30 after a career in Congress. Governor candidate Dwight Griswold plans October 3 Sidney appearance with stops at Lodge Pole and Chappell. Local chairman Leon Fine will organize events.
The Lincoln Star notes Cheyenne county safety drive led by Sidney American Legion post and officials deputized fifty citizens to patrol streets and warn offenders. After a crash killed two, high patrols increased with warnings, not fines, and calls for more citizen committees to aid regular police in reducing Nebraska road deaths.
The Presbyterian circle presented a fine home talent show Friday night featuring a Tom Thumb wedding with Hollis Kepler as minister and Donna Doran and Bobby Sherrerd as bride and groom. The cast included Roger Daniel, Martha Roe, and many Sidney youngsters in a well staged production. Wedding gowns modeled by young women traced styles back to 1881. Continued on page 6, column 1.
Local residents await the October 1 Garden county district court term and the start of the Fred Frahm murder trial in Oshkosh. Speculation centers on unknown state evidence and the identity of the Italian operative tied to the case who reportedly will testify. The operative is said to have led authorities to the sandhill burial site east of Oshkosh where John Frahm’s skeleton was found in 1929.
Cheyenne county proposes earth dam construction in select localities to create emergency water reservoirs for stock, aiding drought relief. Farmers may apply via the local work relief headquarters. two Deuel County dams exist as precedent.
Four state ballots are to be voted at the general election. Provisions require separation: repeal of alcohol prohibition on its own ballot, two initiative amendments on pari mutuel betting and one house legislature printed together on a third ballot, and a fourth ballot listing candidates for state and local offices as well as non political offices like supreme court judges in three districts regents of the university and directors of public power and irrigation districts. The one house legislative amendment is scheduled first because its initiative petition was filed earlier.
Domestic grain markets were barely steady for the week ended September 21 with moderate demand and foreign grain offers near import basis limiting price gains. Wheat and rye softened more than feed grains on foreign and domestic supply pressures, cash wheat down 1 to 2 cents, corn up 1 to 2 cents, oats nearly unchanged, barley down as offerings rose.
The Dalton fall festival, a pioneer event, will be staged on Wednesday and Thursday with the main program Thursday. This year's edition is billed to eclipse previous ones and draw several hundred attendees to the Cheyenne county event.
Mrs. C. E. Roe national field secretary for the PTA will conduct a training class in Scottsbluff on September 28 for sixth district associations. District president Mrs. F. A. Bush of Sidney says interested locals should contact Mrs. Bush or Hugh Slawson for details.
A. J. Johnson, a Cheyenne county farmer, appeals to the state supreme court from a district court order assigning a $10,520 judgment against him to be paid to the Nebraska Wheat Growers association. The suit involved a transfer of Johnsons property to his wife via a third party to avoid the judgment. The association alleged the transfer was to defeat the judgment. Johnson claimed the old suit was settled and his wife paid from her estate, with a $2,000 homestead interest created in the land. A son later sued for $3,000 for work and improvements to the land.
Potter forfeits its remaining Wheat Belt League game to Kimball leaving Sidney and Kimball tied for league championship. A playoff is set at Sidney field on Sunday September 30 after five closely contested games this season.
A man identified as Bart Jones was arrested Sunday afternoon after driving his car into the side of a machine owned by Weldon Thomas of Sidney. Jones was charged with operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was scheduled for arraignment for a plea on Monday.
More than 1800 people attended the hospital opening and inspection reception on Saturday. Registration records show about 1300 adults and over 500 children toured the facility, many drawn by free ice cream.
