The 1936 Cheyenne county fair ended Friday with record attendance and great crowd figures. Police estimate 8 000 on Friday and 3 000 cars Friday night. Grandstand packed and spectators lined the track as officials were praised for a successful event.
State assistance committee approved 259 892 in allotments for social security payments in September. Old age assistance totals 217 055 across 77 counties, aid to dependent children 34 106 in 64 counties, relief 1 721 in four counties, and blind pensions 7 010 in 65 counties. Cheyenne county federal shares were 129 28 for old age, 69 63 for dependent children. state shares 179 26 for dependent children.
Special police estimated 3,000 automobiles filled the fair grounds Thursday night to view the fireworks show. Parking was tight with only a small north end area unused, and fair board members recalled no prior congestion comparable to this event.

A man giving the name Jack Willis was arrested at Dalton Saturday by Sheriff Schulz. He faced charges filed yesterday of possession and offering for sale obscene matter. A number of obscene cards were taken from Willis at arrest, per County Attorney P. J. Huston.
Bunker Hill pulled a surprise in the county fair baseball meet by blasting Potter to win the championship Friday 7 to 5. Peterson of Sidney finished for Potter after Myers was retired as Chasing Myers, an imported hurler, faced the Bunker Hill lineup.
Four burglaries occurred Saturday night at Lodge Pole targets Foster lumber yard and hardware Rogers cafe Smiths elevator and Kripal garage. Loot totaled 12.50 mostly loose change with merchandise left untouched. Entrances gained by prying back windows as deputies hoped for progress before nightfall.
A district meeting of the farmers union will be held in Sidney Wednesday at the city auditorium, beginning at 10 a.m. Delegates are expected from 14 western Nebraska and several eastern Wyoming counties. Principal speakers will be H. G. Kenney of Omaha, state president, and Henry Negley of Broken Bow, field worker. Election of officers and routine business will be addressed. Officers are Robertson president, J. J. Schef cik Alliance vice president, and P. J. Nisson Hay Springs secretary.
Kimball property owners at city hall last Friday opposed a PWA project to curb and gutter streets. A mayoral poll showed unanimous rejection with 5 or 6 relief cases cited. Engineers estimated federal aid could total about 15 thousand dollars to owners and 8 thousand for 50 blocks.
The Inman brothers flying circus troupe performed Sunday in Sidney with plane stunts for several hundred spectators. The day’s highlight was a 4,000 foot parachute jump near the flying field west of town. Attendees rode in three planes including a Ford tri motor, a Stinson trimotor, and a six place Stinson cabin plane.
In an exclusive interview Senator Arthur E. Vandenburg of Michigan argues Landon would win if the election were held today citing a swing toward Landon and his capable cabinet selections. He notes Roosevelt’s strength but questions his control over appointments.
Edgar Leafdale announces a county young Democrats session tomorrow night at the district courtroom starting at eight. The event aims to boost membership ahead of the September 18 19 district meeting at Valentine with P J Heaton expected in Sidney.
No arrests were made by yesterday noon in the gift shop robbery. Investigators checked clues but had few leads, and the thief might not be caught until some stolen merchandise surfaces for sale. Forty watches and dozens of rings were reported missing after an entry through a front door transom.
Wesley Berry leases the Standard Oil service station at Ninth Avenue and Illinois Street, previously operated by Jack Poole, and seeks patronage from his friends. He has long been associated with Standard Oil, pledges competent service, has installed telephone 567, and invites motorists to call for any service offered.
A petition signed by 153 Kimball county farm operators was filed with County Clerk D. T. Heynen to place an extension work appropriation on the fall ballot. If approved, the county commissioners would allocate up to $2,000 annually or a one fifth mill levy from the county general fund. a majority against would deny the appropriation.
The American Legion led Sunday ceremonies for the park dedication honoring Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Grabill whose original gift sparked the park program. Attendees heard from R. P. Kepler about the gift’s value, as Kathy Lou Grabill unveiled the two plaques. The Sidney band performed while Commander R. V. Francis and Mayor substitute W. H. Wehmiller spoke.
Ray Babcock of Sidney won a five year subscription to Telegraph and Telegraph News in a bean guessing contest at the county fair. His bean count 9131 was 27 away from the 9158 total. Patrick Wynne placed second with 9200 and won three years. Mrs. A. E. Stevens took third with 9231 and one year. Peter Hansen won a one dollar credit for being within 100. A list of forty plus near misses earned 50 cents credit.
Dr. L. C. Barstow of Fullerton purchases the dental practice of Dr. A. L. Donahoe in Sidney. Barstow comes after 17 years at Fullerton and is Creighton University trained. Donahoe plans to relocate to Omaha with his family, leaving Sidney midweek.
Art Zike and his educated horse sign a 14 week Fox west coast contract for stage appearances in the Rocky Mountain division. Frank and Bernice Dean roping and riding experts accompany Zike. Fox officials praise the act as top notch for major rodeos and celebrations.
Seeding status shows about 90 percent of western Nebraska producers underway or finished with winter wheat while eastern counties report less than 5 percent. Moisture is generally ample on clean cultivated land, but dry stubble requires fall rains. Hessian fly risk is minimal this year, delaying earlier seeding. Continued discussion on page 6.
J. W. Cochran, director of the Sidney band, announced a free half hour concert Thursday at 7 30 p m in the city auditorium to aid parents and children starting music classes for Sidney pupils. Classes open September 28 for eligible fourth graders and up with no charge. Instrument demonstrations by band and orchestra members will occur and pupil examinations will follow.
Dr. C A Collins of Alliance and his wife were injured when their auto overturned three times north of Dalton after a rear tire blew. Dr Collins suffered a wrenched shoulder and a badly bruised leg, Mrs Collins head and shoulder injuries, Mrs M M Collins head injuries and shoulder, and Mrs Lillian Niefert a head bruise and knee injury. They received treatment at Bridgeport.
Bids on about 105000 dollars of gravel bridge and culvert projects were opened by state engineers on Thursday totaling 83851 dollars and deemed satisfactory by Engineer Lobdell in Tilleys absence. Twenty gravel projects totaling 116 miles will cost 73348 dollars. Gravel is purchased by cubic yard for new grading. Projects include Chappell southeast 1.3 miles Harold McAuliff Chappell Scottsbluff Marsland 8526 ger ing 2526.
Three Sidney girls attending the University of Nebraska were pledged to three different sororities. Frances Goodwin, a first year student, pledged Kappa Alpha Theta. Thelma Ladegard, a sophomore after a year at Stephens College, pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma. Carolyn Kennedy, in her second year after an absence due to illness, pledged Gamma Phi Beta. The sororities are nationally recognized and leaders on the Nebraska campus.
Police probe a fatal hit and run that left Milton Harris a boy of eight severely injured near his Cheyenne County farm. Residents demand clues as an old model T pickup westbound driver is sought amid a brutal roadside accident with the boy hospitalized in Roche hospital.
E R Blome of Sidney announced the purchase of the Bordwell corner on Ninth Avenue and Illinois Street. He and Louis Niebaum plan to move the Sidney Parts and Bearing store into a new building and construct a master service station linked to the parts business. The Zwick grocery previously occupied the corner. The old frame structure is a Sidney landmark now set to be removed. Construction start and service station product details were not disclosed.
Dr H E Mantor former Sidney resident has filed an assault and battery charge against Bob Garrett a Sand Hills rancher in Morrill county. The altercation occurred outside Mantor s office in Broadwater as bystanders watched Garrett allegedly strike Mantor without provocation. Garrett was released on his own recognizance and will appear in Bridgeport court this week. Both men wear mementoes of the fight.
The PWA announced six projects across Nebraska totaling 45 percent grants pending comptroller general approval. Items include Campbell water system 4500 dollars Imperial sewer 29454 Sargent sewage disposal 18000 Sidney street paving 9409 Cedar Rapids street grading loan 3000 grant 2454 Winner country school house loan 3500 grant 2045.
Nebraska officials met at Bridgeport yesterday to discuss the North Platte river water rights suit against Wyoming and Colorado. Attendees included Attorney General William H. Wright, special Nebraska counsel Paul F. Good, R. H. Willis head of the state irrigation bureau, and R. I. Meeker of Denver as a consulting engineer for Nebraska in the litigation.
The Rotary club heard Lois Hardy recount and show moving pictures of a European tour this summer. Lois and her sister Lucile documented visits to several countries with photographs and narration.
After holding the body for 18 days while relatives were located, Rice funeral home sent the body of James Albert Watters to Blue Rapids Kansas for interment beside his wife. A daughter Mrs Edward Morrow accompanied the remains. Mr Watters died in a cabin camp at Potter where he operated a merry go round during Potter days.
Kenneth Johnson, announcer at the county fair, did a fine job. Johnson kept a steady stream of information through the microphone and was seldom off cue. His appearance at the loud speaker was an asset to the fair.
Voters in Potter defeated a proposed $35,000 gymnasium bond by 70 to 63 under PWIA. The plan would have funded 45 percent by grant and 55 percent by loan, and the outcome ends any immediate consideration of the project.
