County Fair Draws Record Attendance For Final Program
The Cheyenne county fair closed last Friday with a capacity crowd and record gate receipts surpassing Thursday. Highlights included free entertainment, an amateur contest, and performances by Big Burma the elephant, Russ and Dale, Hip Raymond, and Ed Weigand with Pinky. Koesters To Enlarge Irrigation Operations
The Koester Brothers, already successful in Box Butte county, are drilling a test hole three and a half miles east of Alliance as a prep for a deeper well. Water was found under 60 feet. the hole reaches about 175 feet. They plan a new well equal to or larger than the current one, despite trimming 640 acres from irrigation this summer.

Wet Paving Blamed For Auto Accident At Point of Rocks
Excessive speed on wet pavement caused a car to fail to negotiate a turn two miles east of Potter near Point of Rocks. Mrs. I R Reed suffered severe facial cuts while her husband and Miss May Louise Dodds of Kansas City MO escaped with minor injuries. The car was badly wrecked but repaired enough to continue eastward the next day.

Traffic Violators Are Charged Last Week
Two traffic law violation charges were filed in county court by state patrolmen within ten days. John Henzl, a Sidney farmer, was charged with running a stop sign and fined ten dollars plus costs but the penalty was refunded after it was noted he lost his wheat crop to hail this summer. Tom Jurgens was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle with plates not matching the vehicle.

Two New Wells Sunk In Bridgeport Area
Two irrigation wells have been completed near Bridgeport by the Nebraska Developing company of Kearney. S R Sweet’s farm on Pumpkin Creek features a 24 inch casing 76 feet deep with 64% feet of water and a Weber turbine pump delivering 1800 to 2000 gallons per minute. The Dunlap farm well has a 24 inch casing, 67 feet depth, and 57 feet of water with a tractor powered pump.

Sidney country club will host its annual fall golf tourney for amateurs next Sunday September 18. The 36 hole medal play begins 7 00 am with 9 30 am cutoff for entries and readiness. Recall Early Day Indian Raid May 19th Era
The Indians on the western plains posed a major obstacle to settlement. With troops and contractors, the Union Pacific built west to Cheyenne, but raids continued for years after its completion. An 1870 raid near Sidney, Nebraska, is recounted by the local agent who witnessed it. The treaty restricting northern tribes to the north side of the North Platte aimed to prevent raids but failed as tribes crossed for hunting and raids. Mrs. John H Summers wife of a San Francisco insurance man was released from Roche hospital Sunday and returned home by train. She had been hospitalized since Wednesday night after suffering a fractured skull and severe lacerations in a crash eleven miles east of Sidney. No other injuries were reported.

Enrollment Drops Noted In Public Schools Reports
Public school enrollment has fallen by about twenty students this year, Superintendent G F Liebendorfer reported. Total registered up to noon yesterday was 782, with high school up twenty due to non resident interest while grade enrollment fell by forty. Kindergarten intake declined by ten as senior high reached 321. More rural students return this year as farm conditions improve.
