The Pershing Memorial Commission forwarded to General John J. Pershing a portrait titled A Great American for his birthday September 13. The oil painting in natural colors is framed in modernistic design by artist Vic Scherzinger of Nelson Nebraska. The Nebraska Legislature unanimously authorized a memorial to Pershing in Lincoln without any tax money appropriated or requested in the resolution.

Six Arrests Friday Nail Judge on Toes
Six people faced charges in county court last Friday before Judge Robert A. Barlow. The most serious case involved Jack Lindsay an electrician with a carnival who allegedly made advances toward a young Sydney girl in a side show building. Lindsay paid a ten dollar fine plus costs. Two carnival workers C L Rowland and William Evans were fined ten dollars and costs for intoxication and served jail time in lieu of payment. A traffic case filed by State Patrolman E W Oltman involved D C Graham of Galesburg speeding and intoxication and Richard Young driver for Graham.

Buying Right of Way For South Highway
A state highway department representative is in the city to acquire right of way for the new South Highway No. 19 from Sidney toward the Colorado Nebraska line. The road committee states a contract may be let in autumn and the route will largely bypass the existing highway, veering about three miles south before turning west to Burlington rail right of way and then south to Colorado No. 1. Governor Cochran is said to be personally interested in opening the road soon.

John H Wagner 79 a Sidney resident for four years died yesterday at a local hospital after two years of failing health. He had been taken to the hospital about two weeks ago in critical condition. He is survived by his widow Cora and three children Frances Thompson Anselmo and Esther.

Joseph Henry Madden 15 father of Edith Hansen and Edson Madden of Sidney died at his Dix home after two years of illness. Funeral at Dix Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. P Pehler. Born August 2 1864 in Donahue Iowa, he lived in Diller and later Sidney and Potter areas before moving to Dix three years ago. Survived by widow seven children 28 grandchildren three great grandchildren two brothers and one sister.
