Sidney approves ordinance No. 258 protecting local coal dealers from direct trucker competition from Colorado and Wyoming mines. Dealers must hold a city permit ($10 annual, due May 1), display “coal dealers” on trucks, keep proper records, and deliver tickets must be left at premises. Violations bring a $100 fine or jail until paid. Continued on Page 6.
Sidney welcomes all to the Cheyenne county fair with free gate access and no charge for most entertainment. The fair board invites every resident to enjoy daily activities, visit neighbors, and celebrate the community as plans highlight a spirit of friendship and shared leisure.
Cheyenne county's free fair opens today at the fair grounds west of Sidney marking the first county wide festival since 1931. Entry day allows exhibitors to bring displays as the three day program begins tomorrow with baseball, amateur county final, fireworks, and an Army field maneuvers and band concert.
S H Snyder added modern equipment to his cleaning plant, including a filtered cleaning fluid system and a large revolving lint and dirt remover, enabling him to process about 125 suits per day after detailing the updated process to a newspaper representative.
Dr. John S. Anderson reports cattle TB testing finished in Frontier County and now active in Scottsbluff Banner Kimball Cheyenne Deuel Gosper and Custer counties. Tests show a low disease percentage in most areas with Cheyenne County noting few reactors and few farmers likely to lose stock. A regular price is set for condemned animals.
Two land deals near Dalton indicate a strong market for farmland. Hob Dryer bought the Jay Pool place a quarter section east of Dalton and Carl Lessig sold a quarter section east of Gurley to J. C. Mauer. Prices were not disclosed but described as substantial.
Dalton's 15th annual Fall Festival will span September 25 and 26 with a planned skeleton program. Committees have been formed for exhibits prizes boxing card finance merry go round music concessions judging parade housing and livestock reception poultry machinery speaker horseshoe games business men float and auto display led by named volunteers.
Preparations start for the sixth district teachers convention in Sidney set for October 23 to 25. O J Weymouth of Sidney will chair local arrangements with help from the chamber of commerce and merchants. Supt G F Liebendorfer leads the effort and all city teachers will serve in some capacity during the meeting.
Ross Gathman son of Mr and Mrs Cha Gathman west of Gurleys suffered a serious accident at work when a hammer struck steel splinter lodged in his left eye. He was treated at Dalton and later sent to Cheyenne for specialist care to prevent infection. The steel fragment was large and nearly penetrated the eye center.
Nebraska counties must publish unpaid claim lists twice yearly on June 15 and September 15 under a 1935 law HR 467. Introduced by R. M. Howard of Flats, effective August 26. Law aims to enforce pay as you go and curb county board contracting without funds.
The effort to provide up to 15 dollars monthly for Nebraskans over 65 faces many "ifs" as congress has not passed the deficiency bill. If approved, federal matching funds would aid state grants, with potential total federal support near 1.3 million dollars if 86,000 Nebraskans over 65 are in need. Continued on Page 6 Column 2.
The Sidney Rifle club hosts out of town shooters on Sunday September 15 for the second annual tri city small bore championship of western Nebraska. Teams from Kimball and Bridgeport compete for the small bore title and an individual champion is named from top scores across all entrants.
Dr. Sinclair of Dalton treated a spate of injuries as a horse fall caused compound fracture of the left arm to Dave Ravert. Vern Ravert also broke a right arm after a fall from the same horse. Lloyd Yowell broke a small leg bone near the left ankle when thrown from a load on a threshing crew.
County commissioners file joint applications with WPA headquarters in Alliance for an extensive road and extension program financed by federal and county funds. The plan totals over 150000 dollars, aims to provide winter employment, and is largely routed through Washington with at least one project already approved.
Three automobile accidents in the Sidney area over the past week injured four people, two seriously. All were treated at Taylor hospital with three expected to be hospitalized for some time. Mrs Deelman and her husband from Los Angeles were injured when their car overturned Saturday. Mrs Deelman sustains a compound fracture and possible internal injuries. her husband has facial cuts and possible internal injuries. Mrs Olgissin, also of Los Angeles, was hospitalized with rib fractures and bruises from a crash involving her son near Lodge Pole. Mrs Jones of Norwich Kansas was injured when her car overturned between Sidney and Bronson.
Roosevelt Rural Public Power District seeks a $428,015 federal loan to bring low cost electricity to 1072 farm homes in Scotts Bluff and Sioux counties. State Engineer Tilley has certified feasibility and SF 310 enabled creation. R E A studies the application as they hold $100 million available for loans. Directors led by Thomas L. Shephard of Mitchell aim to build about 362 miles of transmission lines.
Former congressman Terry Carpenter filed suit in district court at Gering against the city of Scottsbluff asking that 16.6 acres of his land be detached from the city limits. He notes previous suits and says the property is used for farming with no city improvements and remains in the city only for municipal tax purposes.
Grain markets firmed in the week ended September 6 as light milling wheat supplies and favorable foreign markets supported gains. Corn futures stayed barely steady with solid outlooks for new corn. rye and oats climbed modestly amid slow cash demand and ample offerings.
A Orr Brothers representative told the Sidney chamber the community could land a large flour mill valued near 80 000 dollars with 250 barrels per day capacity and 50 000 bushel storage if freight rates drop to match other western Nebraska towns. The project would aid farmers by enabling grain to flour exchange and storage locally.
Nebraska has requested more than 60 million dollars in work relief funds with plans to back additional amounts via bond issues and local sponsors. The breakdown covers airport development, highways, WPA and PWA programs, power and irrigation districts, national guard armories, and related projects through state and local coordination.
Trygve Berby 37 a machinist from Porsgrund Norway was fatally injured when he threw himself in front of a car driven by Dr J Willis Martin of Annapolis in Chappell authorities said Berby planned to travel home by ship from New York on September 11. Dr Martin was cleared of blame.
Nearly 300 people attended a Friday night dinner honoring Harry B. Coffee of Chadron on his return from Washington. Coffee described his freshman congressman experiences and outlined steps for introducing a bill. The Dawes County Young Democratic Club sponsored the event.
Fullerton and Gering competed for the top city levies as 1936 figures arrived. Gering posted a total levy of 73.30 mills across city county state and school, the highest seen by State Tax Commissioner W. H. Smith, while Fullerton totaled 60.12 mills. Scottsbluff held a lower city levy at 26.80 mills but totalled 65.80 mills, ranking second to Gering. Gering was once known as tax free.
Potter Day drew large crowds on Friday and Saturday with strong turnout from Key each day. The program ran smoothly though rain flopped crops on display showing the wet conditions did not dampen the event or Potter's hospitality.
At a special Potter village board meeting last Friday evening, steps were taken to apply for a $12,000 loan and grant under PWA to buy and install a new diesel unit in the light plant. If approved, the government would gift 45 percent and loan 55 percent at 4 percent interest.
