Domestic wheat prices Saturday exceeded government loan rates at many markets and rose earlier than in the past three seasons. In Sidney wheat stood at 96 cents, two cents above the loan average per bushel. Traders predicted further flow into market channels if prices rise over loan rates, with storage costs and interest shaping farmer decisions.
The Frontier Mining Co. announces its second oil well in Kansas, offsetting its initial south end Zenith Pool well in Stafford County. The new discovery at 3,350 feet yields a potential 10,000 barrels daily, proving the 160 acre lease and supporting plans for at least six more wells. President M. H. Rebineau is in Canada and unavailable for comment.
State Engineer Wardner G. Scott said Nebraska is assured of enough steel for 1942 license plates. Twenty tons of the 105-ton state order already shipped and Inland Steel Co promised a further 40 tons. Plates will have a white background with large red numerals and a sample has been on display at the county treasurer's office for weeks.
The 1941 championship golf tournament at Sidney Country Club moved past the first round with upsets heightening interest. Louie Johnson defeated Don Jorgenson in 20 holes, halving the 19th and birdieing the 20th to win. Dorwart beat Murray 3-1, Grieve edged Hock 6-3, Babcock upset Doran 3-2, Smith won 4-3 over Ladine, and Tompkins beat Mueller 7-6 aided by Gallagher’s eagle on the 16th.
Agriculture department statisticians said Nebraska government benefit payments to farmers for 1941 would equal or exceed last year. Cash income for six months fell by 16.6 million due to bookkeeping delays in checks, with 126.89 million total including 5.04 million in bounty payments, versus 127.48 million in 1940 including 21.66 million federal payments.
The county fair hosts 4-H livestock and home economics judging. Ruby Sparks and DeLorus Yowell won champion in home economics demonstration. George Coulter Jr and Benton Walker champion in agricultural. Second and third placers named for both divisions. Livestock judging crowned Better the Best 4-H team with 1399 points. other teams from Sidney Vo-Ag and Busy Workers followed. Judges were Mrs Wayne Campbell and Miss Arvilla Hanson.
Unsettled weekend weather in Cheyenne county with dust, wind, and rain. temperatures fell to near forty degrees Monday morning after a Sunday wind storm. A lingering western Nebraska gale over a week disrupted wheat planting plans as farmers welcomed moisture but braced for the cold ahead.
City officials announce improvements to the jail and fire department buildings to enhance sanitation and fireproofing. Mayor Roche cites risks from crowded winter conditions and potential inmate safety concerns. The Bridgeport News-Blade reports a Black man was arrested by Morrill county sheriff last week at the home of Mr and Mrs Miller near Angora after entering in search of food. A hat outside prompted Mrs Miller to search, and the man was found under the bed where he replied yes’m heah ah is.
Sidney business and professional men who cooperated with the fair head in providing calves for the 1941 calf scramble have again scored a hit in entertainment and have started ten happy boys on 4 H feeding project which may be the foundation of as many successful farm livestock programs. As the closing feature of the Friday afternoon program at the Cheyenne County Fair 10 calves and 20 boys mixed it up in the arena in front of the grand stand. The calves had been turned loose there and it was the job of the boys to catch a calf, halter it and lead it from the ring.
The Cheyenne County Red Cross seeks more volunteers for sewing and knitting to reach a larger county quota. Mrs. Mark Howard and Mrs. L C Barstow urge women to join, noting Cheyenne has shipped two quotas and Sidney chapter holds 40 percent. The county must produce 4557 garments with specific knitting and sewing targets for men women and children. Rooms are open weekday afternoons for group or home work.
J A Little, rate expert for the Nebraska Railway Commission, filed a statement with railroads proposing freight rate cuts on barley and oats within Nebraska and neighboring states. The reductions could reach 33 1/3 percent to spur marketing of large harvests, but Chicago market opposition prevents matching cuts there. Little says the plan aims to increase track competition, which is lacking in Chicago.
Captain R T Schrein resigns as head of the state safety patrol after years of service beginning in 1937. Lieutenant Carl J Sanders, already in charge of the Omaha Fort Crook detail, is appointed captain and assumes duties immediately. Sanders started with the patrol in 1937, will receive $200 temporarily, while Schrein moves to Lincoln as Sun Life Insurance representative next month. During his tenure, patrol personnel have been increased.
Cheyenne county reported a very light vote in the potato marketing referendum ending Saturday. AAA Chairman James H. Campbell said the ballasts were not opened here to reveal county results, though a report on the referendum is anticipated immediately. Campbell expressed surprise at the small turnout.
Mrs. Sara Delano Roosevelt, mother of the president, died suddenly Sunday at her Hyde Park home. A complete circulatory collapse, due to advanced age, was given as the cause of death. President Roosevelt postponed his important speech and will deliver it Thursday night at seven o'clock Mountain Standard Time via nationwide hookup.
A plan to merge the county fair and Fort Sidney Day into one large celebration draws attention from the county fair board, county commissioners, and Fort Sidney Day officials. Aimed at a two week horizon, supporters cite a unified program representing Sidney and Cheyenne County, while opponents fear loss of Fort Sidney Day’s historic focus and local autonomy.
The world’s most powerful locomotive known as Big Boy passed Sidney around 4 a.m. Sunday en route to Green River to haul heavy loads on the Sawtooth grade between Green River and Ogden. Built with four cylinders and a hinged middle for curves, it weighs 595 tons with tender and measures 133 feet long.
The 1941 Cheyenne County fair attracted good crowds and strong exhibits despite attendance dropping from last year. Officials cited busy farming and post harvest work as causes for fewer exhibits across thirteen premium classes, though livestock quality rose with top displays in sheep hogs and the 4 H calf class. A mass flight from Denver to Sidney will launch Let's Go To A Movie Month at the Fox Theatre. About twenty people aboard ten pilots will deliver the print of Dive Bomber, opening Sunday. Plans include a nine a.m. arrival, a public reception, and breakfast with local dignitaries before the return flight to Denver.
