Annual County Fair Opens Today at Cheyenne County

The Cheyenne county fair opens today and runs through Friday with entry day today and no admission. Tuesday features display listings and booth setup for businesses and organizations. Wednesday starts official programs and opening horse races at 1 30 p m with acts by Dalton band Big Burma and others.

Funeral Services Held for Dr. James R. Taylor

Funeral services for Dr. James R. Taylor 58 a prominent western Nebraska surgeon were held at the Methodist church with Rev J J Sheaff and Dr W T Kahse officiating. Interment followed in Sidney Greenwood cemetery. Survivors include Kathryn wife two daughters Anne and Harriett his mother Anne Brooks Taylor and siblings in North Carolina. Dr Taylor who died of a heart ailment last Thursday founded the Taylor Hospital in Sidney in 1927 and had been a Union Pacific surgeon since 1923.

Four Year Term For Auto Crash Principal

Ray Little received a four year penitentiary term after pleading guilty to manslaughter in Keith County District Court. The fatal crash near Ogallala Paxton killed A. J. Majors, 65, of Chappell. The accident occurred about a week earlier between Ogallala and Paxton.

Keltti Reader from the Extension Forester's office reports on Clarkes McNary windbreak plantings in Cheyenne county. The farm bureau education program promotes regular cultivation to conserve soil moisture, curb weeds, and aid young trees during hot dry spells. Examples on Winkelman and Weible farms show high survival with soil prep, careful planting, and periodic hoeing. ordinary farm tools suffice to keep tree ground clean.

Amateur Contest to Be Staged Friday at County Fair

Amateurs enter for cash prizes and dance tickets in the annual county fair contest at the fair grounds. Friday night at 7 30 the stage show begins. no eliminations at Fox Theatre due to few entries. Prizes are 12 8 and 5 dollars for first three places. fourth to sixth receive dance tickets for September 12 at the city auditorium. Contestants will be advised by letter and must report by 7 15 with a piano provided.

Rainfall Tops Two Inches In County Harvest Prep

Western Nebraska saw generous September rain aiding wheat planting as moisture ranged from two to four inches. Sidney reported 1.80 inches in a 72 hour period, totaling 2.16 inches for the week with another brief shower. Potter territory especially in the north received nearly four inches as the autumn storm soaked fields and revived dry creeks. Farmers paused field work to let topsoil soak, while stores in Sidney saw a lull followed by renewed planting plans as fair conditions and possible showers are forecast.

Testing Equipment Being Installed for Sidney Vehicle Station

Equipment for Sidney vehicle testing may start in two to three weeks. Harvey Vizina, appointed inspection chief, supervises installation, concrete work and details at the station just north of the Burlington depot. The setup will accommodate large trucks passing through Sidney.

PWA Deadline Threatens Sidney Local Projects

Sidney officials say a Oct 1 deadline set by Secretary Ickes for local bond elections will bar PWA funded projects this year. No action was taken on proposed projects at Friday’s council meeting as three weeks of bond advertising would push election past the deadline. A drainage ditch north of town discussed as a PWA project faces possible cancellation due to the timing and no city election date has been set.

Fatal Crash Reported At Ogallala

Nellie Mary Chelius aged 54 of Chiago died at Ogallala Friday night from injuries from a two vehicle collision west of Ogallala. A truck driver L A Barger of Norfolk suffered minor injuries. Mrs Chelius was returning home with her son Jack who had slight hurts. With Barger were Vincent Schalk 30 of Petersburg and Charles Morgan 60 of Haskins both with skull fractures and listed in critical condition.

The chamber merchants committee announced a citywide trade event planned for September 29 to 30 and October 1. Details remain unspecified while retailers will be informed in advance. Yesterday’s civic club meeting centered on the high school trade education program.

Sidney businesses will close all afternoon Thursday as clerks attend the county fair. The chamber of commerce started the practice years ago and most stores will close at 1 p.m. for the day though some reopen after the fair. Hruska Auto Theft Ties To Walker Pair

FBI raided a mountain cabin near Alamosa Colorado capturing Le Roy Walker and his wife without a shot. They are linked to the theft of Herbert Hruska of Sidney with a field theft and a Nebraska stolen car origin. Sheriff Schulz says the couple were in the territory this summer and their five year old son was with them.

Peetz Child Killed in Head-On Wreck Near Sidney

Deanna Nelson ten months old daughter of Mr and Mrs L K Nelson of Peetz died from a crushed head after a head on crash four miles south of Sidney Sunday night. Mrs Nelson suffered a badly injured ankle while Mr Nelson and Miss Hildegarde Wendt of Sterling were bruised but not seriously hurt. Both cars were wrecked and the Nelson car overturned as Mrs Wendt’s car crossed the center line. The child was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital and the body taken to the Gehrig Home.

Chet Swinbank reports the Cheyenne County Farm Bureau plots are in excellent condition after inspection. A possible tour may be arranged after wheat planting, with alfalfa at Olson ranch near Sidney showing eight varieties, corn at Schumacher farm near Gurley, and sorghum plots near Sunol eight miles north on Rexroth farm revealing varied adaptation and usage.

August Rainfall Below Normal Worsened Nebraska Corn Loss

U S weather bureau figures show Nebraska August rainfall under par. Only 6 of 26 stations had above average moisture while deficiency and shallow subsoil moisture from prior droughts caused corn to fail to shoot ears. Sidney recorded 1.27 inches versus a 2.30 inch normal.
