A new all paved Highway No 19 shortens the Sidney to Sterling trip by about seven and a half miles. speedometer checks show 412-19 miles via the new route versus 487-10 on the old road. The straight path to Lorenzo and through Peetz avoids grade crossings and sharp turns and offers a smooth surface and clear long-range visibility.

Telegraph Beginning 68th Year Of Service

The Telegraph, one of Nebraska's oldest newspapers, begins its sixty eighth year of publication this week. It has served Sidney and Cheyenne County without missing an issue, with files dating to 1876. Publisher Guy W Doran has led since 1921, following long ownership by Fred and Henry Gapen.

Don Jorgenson and Dorwart Reach Finals in 1940 Golf

Don Jorgenson, 1937 champion, and Dr. C B Dorwart advanced to the Sidney Country Club final after tight 3-2 and neck-and-neck matches. Jorgenson posted 35-39 for his win over Joe Simodynes, while Dorwart edged Lee Ellsworth in a hard fought 18 holes.

American Legion Dance Saturday At City Auditorium

The American Legion will hold a dance on Saturday night September 7 at the city auditorium with Hick Barker and his band. It is the final night of the county fair and the only dance tied to the annual festival. Barker's band has been praised by dance followers.

Omaha Man Victim of Crash Injuries Suffered August 26

John H Wells a 22 year old carnival trooper died in a local hospital after his car overturned on the viaduct east of town the night of August 26. He suffered a fractured skull brain concussion and a broken neck. His 17 year old bride was slightly injured. The couple operated a shooting gallery with a carnival company playing at Chappell. Wells was brought to Sidney then sent to Omaha where his body rests with his family.

Arthur Sweet Former Sidney Resident Dies in Oregon

Arthur Sweet, a former resident of Sidney, died in Salem Oregon on August 28 at about 61. He was the brother of Sam Sweet and the father of Lloyd Sweet and Mrs Robert Sellers of Sidney. Surviving are three other children Melvin Otis and Cleo Simpson as well as thirteen grandchildren. He lived here for many years and had many friends in the area.

Calf Scramble at Cheyenne County Fair Friday

The Cheyenne county fair hosts a calf scramble as a new feature of the 1940 fair. Twenty Sidney sponsors back the event with calves. Twenty boys will enter the ring. the first ten to halter and lead a calf win the animals. Winners must feed and report to sponsors for a year and present a project under 4-H guidance.

Sidney Stores Close Friday Afternoon To Allow Festival Attendance

Sidney stores will close Friday afternoon from 1 PM until the festival program ends to let clerks and other workers attend the event. The Cheyenne County fair will showcase a fireworks display Thursday night after the program in front of the grandstand. The 1940 Cheyenne County Fair begins at the Sidney fairgrounds with a four day schedule Thursday through Saturday. Top attraction is the Polack Brothers circus featuring Capt Noble Hamiter and a lion act, plus eleven other acts. Friday and Saturday include both afternoon and evening performances with a pre show band concert. Wednesday is entry day with no program.

High Protein Tests Expand Nebraska Wheat Loan Program

The AAA wheat loan program in Nebraska grows with more than 16 thousand loans on 1940 stored wheat and an estimated nine million bushels stored. Since 1938 the program shows 1988 loans at four thousand and 1989 loans at 14,882 with 3.6 and 8.76 million bushels stored respectively. At 65 cents per bushel the stored grain implies about 585 million dollars invested, though higher loans occur for western Nebraska grain due to protein content.

Gurley and Potter Prepare One Game at Fair

Gurley and Potter will stage a single baseball game at the fair grounds Thursday afternoon at 130 as the fair opens. Potter holds the stronger record but Gurley could upset if breaks go their way. This is the only game on the fair program with a $100 purse and no tournament.
